Welcome to Alkeks Abroad! I’m Courtney, the voice behind the blog.

This is my husband, Travis. I am still campaigning for him to write a guest post.

His job brought us across the world from Houston, Texas to Brisbane, Australia in July 2014.

I was a fourth grade teacher in Houston, and spent a year and a half working as a substitute teacher and fourth grade teacher in Brisbane before being promoted to the best job ever…

stay at home mum to this little nugget who joined our family in August 2016.

In my spare time I create resources for other teachers, travel with my little family around Oz and beyond, work on my photography skills, and binge watch TV shows on Netflix.

On Alkeks Abroad you will find a mix of posts on our life as expats, our life as just plain humans, our travels, recipes I likebooks I would recommend and anything else I deem blogworthy.

    Dear Alkeks Abroad,

My name is Joyce and I work for ExpatFinder.com.
ExpatFinder.com is a free one stop website for people preparing to move or working and living overseas. We provide a myriad of services for expatriates and we have over 2,000 articles to help and support the people moving around the world and we are now creating an interview section to help the expats with real life experiences!
We quite enjoy your blog about living in Brisbane, it is very interesting and informative. Would it be possible to interview you to further share some of your tips and feature some of your first hand experience as an Expat and your interview will be published on our Expat Interview section as a guide for our expat readers. The questions are mainly about the day to day lifestyle of an expat. If it would be possible, could you also send some photographs that we can use?
Of course, if you accept, we can add a link to your blog or some of your website.
The questions are enclosed, feel free to respond freely. You can return the doc with your answers if you accept this invitation.
Thanks in advance and do let me know if you prefer other means to conduct this interview and we would be happy to accommodate your terms.

    Best regards,

  • Saw your post on Abby’s blog – being from Houston, I had to stop by since you mentioned Katy AND Galveston! 🙂 I really like the look and feel of your blog. Luck you to be living in Australia!

    • Courtney Alkek

Thanks! I feel like living in Katy at some point is an expat right of passage. I went to high school with people I grew up with all over the world.

  • UM hi you have a cool life!! We always say if we had the chance we would jump at living abroad. I love blogs like this! xo

  • So happy to have found your blog! I am a teacher too – love your resources, great work! 🙂

I have just discovered your blog from Wanderful Wednesday. Being a fellow Aussie, your Brisbane title caught my attention instantly. Looking forward to reading your posts. Lorelle
